Won't somebody please think of the children?!

Not only is her editorial vastly misinformed (it was a popsickle, not a lolipop, and no ones brains actually got blown out) but she seems to have the TV ratings system ass-backwards in her head. FLCL is TV-14, not PG.
Saturn9
Now that's just Fooly Coolied. huh.gif
If it isn't painfully obvious, peoply will complain about ANYTHING. Even a great show like FLCL...which is pure genius.
Lady, it's a rating, if you're kid is up at 12AM he can watch stuff a lot worse than FLCL. It ran for 12 days, and by a undetermined, yet probable chance it may return again.
Whatever... mad.gif
Warhawk
[Unbelievably obvious sarcasm]Little teenagers that use their magical guitars to fight the evil baseball? Good lord, what sort of sick, twisted being would intend this show for children? This should be taken off Cartoon Networt post-haste![Unbelievably obvious sarcasm]

Wait. It already has. dry.gif
Daniel
Does she not realize what adult swim is?

They put up the fricken warning, and if she doesn't like it, how about she watch her children instead of bitching to try to get someone else to watch them for her?

My GOD This crap makes my blood boil!
Art[kin]
Sorry for being so out of it, but I never actually knew the name of that cartoon. I myself, like S9, thought it was "pure genius". I hope it returns. Maybe iMesh will have some downloadable videos.

I don't think I saw this popsicle scene, though. They actually aired a scene like that? I don't think it's bad for them to air that, but I'm a little shocked considering CNs normal editing (a la DBZ/Bebop).
Darksword
Yeah, it's in episode 5. This purple haired girl is really having fun eating her popsicle. wink.gif Naota even watches her for a couple seconds and blushes.

Then she bites it and they give her a squirt gun.
Saturn9
You cannot deny it, the sexual imagery never ceases in FLCL.
Things emerging out of Naota's head, the "Gunslinger Robot", Ninamori's popscicle and squirtgun, the transformation of Kanti and the cannon, etc.
The thing is, it's really subtle. A little kid will look at Ninamori eating that ice cream and think it's 100% normal. But an adult has a "dirty" mind and therefore sees the significance.
You also have Naota being thrust into sexual encounters at a young age with two psychotic women (though they're on opposite ends of the spectrum). I actually related a lot to Naota's [normal] experiences. How normal one considers it, my life at Naota's age eerily coincidental, which is probably why I like the show so much.
("Nothing interesting ever happens here, everything is normal...")

Nevertheless, Sigmund Freud could work for years and write volumes from studying the Gainax and Production I.G. staff. He could write an entire book on Anno.
"Zis Ahnno, I need to shpeak with him immeediatly, he has deep shycological isshues."

And for the record, MacLeod is totally the nerdy friend, you know..."SMOOOCH?!"
Nydyne
=P I knew someone was going to do this sooner or latter. FLCL is just to wierd for any middle aged soccer mom to comprehend. If little Timmy's TV set is on at 12:00am, i can tell you that FLCL is the worst of your worries. Check out HBO at that hour. tongue.gif

Maybe they should program the TV correctly and have AS airing hours restricted from viewing. laugh.gif Better yet! Little Timmy shouldn't even be up that late in the first place! dry.gif Parents need to watch their children...
Symphony of Destruction
Blame society, blame the media.

You know, there's an old saying: Set a man in his ways and he shall not stray from them.

Well, it's parents who set their children in their ways. If you can't raise a child right, get a visectomy or get your tubes tied and shut the hell up. Honestly, there should be a government mandated test that dictates who is allowed to have children and who is not, because most parents today are pathetic.

Sorry, it's not Doom's fault that you child went off and caused Columbine Mom and Dad, it's yours. You did a piss-poor job of raising him.

On another subject, Scooby-Doo ain't exactly free of subliminal messaging either.
Strife
Hah, that's brilliant. Another example of when angry parents see something they disagree with on TV. Obviously the woman made her entire impression from that one episiode. I wonder if she even bothered to watch the others and get a full feel for the series, rather than making one rash decision because of one scene. Yes, there is sexual innuendo in FLCL, but so what. Like Darksword said, it is rated TV-14, I really don't know where she got that whole PG crap from.

Well, while she does give an interesting perspective from the monotonous-parent angle, none of her points are really valid IMO. If parents don't like FLCL, don't let their own kids watch it. Stop ruining it for everyone else...
Kobel
Urge to kill... rising...
Well, people always have to bitch about anything even the slightest bit cool, that's their nature. Honestly, though, has she watched LOONEY TUNES? If she thinks cartoons of ANY sort are purely innocent and free of innuendo, she is so painfully deluded it's not even funny.
Moreover, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't PG stand for Parental Guidance? 'Nuff said.
Hydrothermia
This has always been my complaint, why are we allowing people to associate anime as kiddie stuff? Yes some of it is directed towards children, but that doesn't mean that all anime is that way. It's the dreaded stereotype of anime, which is only one of other stereotypes it has been given. For instance shows like Digimon, Pokemon, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. is geared toward the younger audience, but shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Hellsing, Chobits, etc. are for the 'mature' anime watcher. Fan service and ecchi gets thrown inbetween, but it's in a tatseful manner. Thankfully this is far from the adult tags of hentai, which is all out animated porn, in some cases I would think it's far worse than what's in some of the porn industies here. In any case, maybe people want to say it's a gateway to these other things that exist in the genre of anime, like they say marijuana is the gateway drug to doing harder stuff. Perhaps, but that's a bit farfetched for me.

Parents strongly cautioned.  The following programs are intended for mature audiences over the age of 18.  These programs may contains intense violence, sexual situations, coarse language, and suggestive dialogue.

Yeah...they put that there at the beginning of AS for a reason. I'm willing to bet she didn't even take the time to look for something like that...

Let me say that we are not extremists. We don't try to hide our kids from the real world, nor do we chase down every bad thing in life and try to abolish it or censor it. What we are saying is that this particular show is vulgar and dangerous and could possibly incite violence. We are outraged that it has been rated TV-PG to be openly viewed by kids on, of all places, The Cartoon Network.

I'm not clear about it but isn't this just ironic that they are doing exactly what they said they never do?

Yes, that statement seems very contradictory. Bah I just want FLCL back on.

October 6 is when it returns IIRC... I'm going to buy the DVDs so I don't care...

It is either on Cable or Satelite which are now kind of considered premium services. I hate it when people pay for things then complain about them and try to change and ruin it for everyone else.

I seriously considered writing her a letter explaining point by point what was wrong with her analysis.(cause I got her address YAY internet) But I don't even want to waste my time. She is basicaly yelling at a wall, there is no way she is going to affect FLCL on TV.
Saturn9
The DVDs are great, the last one (I think the best) has a music video for "Ride On Shooting Star". Reminds me very much of a more punked out Weezer video.
Havent gone through all the extras yet, just happened to catch that one.

*whacks S9 in the forehead with his bass guitar*

Watch it, bucko. PYON!

*grows his goatee back out and starts selling 'zines and talking about Gundam and Hamtaro*

You don't mess with Kamon. 'Nuff said.

*grabs bass to go start smacking soccer moms over the head, changes his mind, puts on Nazi outfit, and grabs megaphone and AirSoft model Luger with an overly large barrel*
Saturn9
lol

You wish you had that Rickenbaker.
Though if I did I wouldnt use it to smack suburbanite ladies in the head with.
Your Ibanez will do you just fine...

*searches EBay for Gibson ES-1s*

Saturn9
Actually it was a '61 model.
Darksword
Yeah, but I can't find any pictures of one. tongue.gif Seems they changed the body style in 61, so only 100 of the original EB-0s were made in that year. 62 is as close as I can get.
MacLeod
1962 Gibson EB-0... pretty... *drools*
Saturn9
The picture you showed is the 1962, it's also fairly rare. Notice how the pickup is really high, that was characteristic up until '64/65 when they started using dual pickups.

Here's the version you want...
THE GUITAR OF THE PIRATE KING!!!

If I find a better picture I'll post it, but notice how the single pickup is smack dab in the middle of the body, very rare guitar.
Godsent
Well, she got the main idea of the show anyways... dry.gif

As jonny the homicidal maniac once said, books, television and music, they are all forms of entertainment, not guidebooks to condemn yourself (or something to that extent).

I raised myself, because my parents were too messed up on heroin to do their job, and I was watching horror/slasher flicks since I was 4. As well, my father once turned off The Crow because it was too violent. He put in "Blown Away" as a substitute. What's worse? I guy who can't die getting shot up, and no really detailed violence or a guy bieng rigged with explosives and set to go off if he moves?? My point has been proven.

And if this soccer mom is really trying to "protect her innocent little children from pointless violence" then she needs to bar the windows and door of her home, Home-school little billy, get the cable rigged so only TLC is on, and then he;'ll be alr-- wait, cut out TLC, they have stuff on war, instead, she should throw her T.V. out the window. And if little billy is up at midnight anyhow, odds are he's heard mommy and daddy trying to make him a sibling, so yeah.

Face it, kids are going to be exposed to this, and it's good for them. Desensitisation (if that's a word) is good at an early age. They need to learn life sucks, people die, get over it, move on, and understand that if you put a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger there are going to be very real, possibly fatal, consequences.
Rattan
Perhaps her outrage would explain why I saw Cowboy Bebop was rated Y the other day....no typo...it was Y....
SDF-1
And that was the episode where they flew the Columbia...
