Ok cool...but where was Major?

The only redeeming quality of Shirow's expansive and largely incomprehensible body of work is his artwork. Mutilating his style, or not even attempting to emulate it pretty much destroys any incentive for seeing these animated features.

This is the anime equivalent of bad licensed games, or bad comic book to movie conversions.

Bleh!

I beg to differ. To me, GITS is the epitome of quality anime. I watch the first one over and over and over again and never get bored with it. How can you say his style is mutilated? We are talking about manga ---> anime here. Masamune Shirow's story was the inspiration for the films, not the artwork. His artwork is awesome, but so are his stories.

You are entitled to your opinion though. DAMN GA you are such a HATER.

Let me add this. A lot of times people compare book ----> movie and are dissappointed that the movie didn't capture everything that was in the book. This is probably why GA doesn't like the anime renditions of GITS. Am I right? GITS didn't capture the feel of the manga as well as it should. On top of that, the artwork wasn't close to Shirows designs.

Dude, the first movie was based on the last story arc of the original comic series IIRC.

It's no secret that Shirow cannot write a clear and understandable story. It's all techno masturbation for him. Go read GitS, Orion, and GitS2. You'll see the man is all about drawing titties and machinery, and the "story" bits are his latest thesis on technology theory.

I've got friends that read gobs of hardcore Sci-Fi that can't even stomach Shirow's "writing".

GitS the animated movie was enjoyable, but aside from a vague connection to the last story arc of the first series, bore no real relation to Shirow's work.

I'm just guessing you're not all that familiar with Shirow's body of work, outside of the horrid animated adaptations. Once you see his natural knack for drawing a nice oiled up rack, you'll agree that he's just there for eye candy.

Quality anime?

Do yourself a favor and rent Grave of the Fireflies and, or Barefoot Gen.

I also don't comprehend the rationalization that X Adaptation based off of Y Product should be given free license to totally fuck up the appreciation of Y Product. After all Product X is riding piggyback on the success of Product Y. If you're not going to please the fans, then you're just making another shitty licensed movie.

Here's a novel idea. Instead of taking a well known property and turning it on it's ear because you have your "own creative voice", but not a single original idea in your head, you just make an seperate product and sell it on the merit of it's qualities?

I'm a fan of the animated works. I really do need to pick up the GITS manga though and read it cover to cover. I grew up watching Dominion, Black Magic and Appleseed. I mean, I was introduced to full length feature anime the first time I saw Vampire Hunter D. From there it was Shirow, then Fist Of The North Star, then Akira and so on. There were full seasons of Star Blazers and Battle Of The Planets too. So I'll check out the manga and see how it is. I'm hearing that the new Appleseed movie is DIGGITY DOPE as hell.

Yeah, if all you know of Shirow are the shit adaptations of his works, then you're only getting a tiny percentage of the picture. Shirow is fairly comprehensible in Appleseed, Dominion, and the original Ghost in the Shell. Everything else that I've read from him is laden with so much made-up technobabble, that it's a chore to read.

You spend half of your time reading footnotes in the gutter of the panels to stay on your toes.

I have friends that read nothing buy hard core science fiction, heavy emphasis on science. As in basis in fact. The sort of sci-fi fans that will gladly emasculate any geek seeking giant robots running around the real world.

They can't stand Shirow's "writing". It's nonsense.

Shirow can eat me. I love his art, and I'll buy calendars for the pictures, but I'm not watching any further adaptations of his incomprehensible works. AppleCGd being the exception, as that's a pre-lunatic Shirow foundation.

I'll just download what I want of his, and pray that some day his mind returns to Earth.

It's also worth pointing out that you're an asshole if you don't run out and buy all nine issues of Fist of the North Star Master Edition currently in print. You can't call yourself a FotNS fan without these.

The movie is such a horrible Cliffs Notes version of the events of the manga it makes my head spin. Awesome characters completely ABSENT. Enemies amalgamated to make two or three foes one easy to swallow boss in the movie.

The movie will always have a special place in my earliest memories of commercial anime when it existed on the fringe, but it does not stand the test of time, and does the original body of work a great disservice.

Did you get the series that was released in japan? It's like 152 episodes or something. My friend has it. It's really deep. Long before FOTNS was an anime, I was reading the manga in my local comic book store. I was simply...amazed.

Sorry man, but do you just read the oldest, ugliest manga series out there? Yes Gen and Fist of the North Star were good, but are there any contemporary manga...no make that are there any contemporary things at all that you like?

Although I must admit, being a Jojo fan, it's odd hearing this come from me, since I really enjoyed the first two volumes.

G.A. is all about being an oldskooler! He loves his outdated manga, anime, clothing, hairstyle, and life in general. How he managed to get a internet hookup to the cave he lives in is amazing. One thing I can garuntee though is that his cotton gin will own you in a game of Virtua Fighter. biggrin.gif

I actually like the anime of Gits. The manga appears to be fanservice, although that can be found in all his mangas. Atleast when Major is naked in the movie it has some thought behind it. Plus GitS isn't meant to be comprehended. It is there for you to watch and go "ooh pretty...but wtf does it mean?"

Looks nice.

Kaze-San: Oh, she makes a cameo in the movie, for sure, alright, if you were paying a bit more attention... she was that little girl in the dress who was touching the signs on the floor, with Batou's dog nearby (or was it just the next scene with the dog in it? Whatever...). I'm almost sure it's probably Kusanagi because she seemed to have more human mannerisms than those doll monster things chasing after Batou.

For anyone who's wondering what she's doing in a little girl's body, I think you should go back and watch the end of the first movie. wink.gif
