Full Version: Tournament in Scranton, PA
The Raven's Haven > Armored Core > Raven Nexus
DeeBuddens
Macronus and myself are planning on holding a Silent Line tournament in Scranton, PA sometime during the month of January. Macronus already has all the nescessary space and equipment to hold a large-scale tournament, and I'll provide as much pizza/beer/whatever floats your boat as I can afford to. Before we commit ourselves to this thing financially, we're polling for support around different message boards. If you'd be interested in attending a serious AC gathering in Northern PA, please state so in this post.
Adamantrue
Well, the timing of this event should work out well, assuming it isn't too early in January (some of us have cleaning up to do after the Holidays, and money can be tight). I'd be more than happy to come, and hope others could make it too.

You up for this, Banshee? Need a lift?
DeeBuddens
We'll determine a date based on the most opportune time for the majority of players to show up. I'm thinking the weekend of Washington's birthday, so the school kids can still come because they have a 3-day weekend. If anyone has any suggestions for an actual date or a certain week out of the month, let me know.
Macronus
This should be a good one. We're advertising it on ACO as well, for those of you who aren't members there you should check it out, it's a pretty cool forum. As Dee mentions, we're kind of in the planning stage right now, the final details can be worked out once we get some replies so we can get the most Ravens possible to attend. It should be a good time all the way around, though, and a great way for some of us to see how good we really are(n't?). If you're interested post a reply here or at ACO or both and when it gets closer to tourney time we'll contact people personally and see what we're working with.

Dee, good suggestion on the Washington's B-Day weekend idea. Everybody else, let us know what you think.
Banshee
'True, do you really have to ask? Ofcourse I'm down for it, just give me a time, date, and rules and all that.
DeeBuddens
OK, I've come up with a few suggestions for rules and fight structuring, and I'd like to hear people's views:

1. BAN MG800(ban K-Saw?).

2. Ban tread legs(opinions on this one?)

3. Three-out-of-five matches, three minute time limit per match

4. Rest period in between heats

5. 1st match will be in Arena stage, loser picks afterwards

If anyone reading this would like to offer suggestions to deal with somewhat controversial issues like Solid Shield Extensions and Weapon Breaking, it would be appreciated.
Bigphil233
No tread legs?! so basically since you're probably going to include no OP-I on that list Quads are the only thing that can utilize the GNL?... IMO that's kinda pushing the envelope a lil bit. MG800 ban, maybe even SRFL70(if you want to try to see originality), Tin arms(undecided on this), and solid shields... WB off, plz tongue.gif. Dunno man every tourny setup has it's good points and bad, so it's your call in the long run.

If anyone reading this would like to offer suggestions to deal with somewhat controversial issues like Solid Shield Extensions and Weapon Breaking, it would be appreciated.

1) I'd prefer not to Ban any part, but go with restrictions instead. For instance, I'd rather see people limited to Blades with the 800 or 'SAWA, since Bladers could use the support of a strong, stand alone R Arm weapon, while those that want a Two-Arm offense would have to choose an alternate Machine Gun, but gain more flexibility.

2) Tread Legs...well, some people have their best game on not-so-broken Tanks, and it wouldn't be fair to eliminate them. I still think a maximum AC weight is in order, to keep Tanks and Heavies from having both advanced armor levels, and kick-ass payloads. One or the other is fine, but both is just too much.

3) No problem here.

4) Again, no problem, especially for the free play to be had, or simply smoke breaks (a few of us smoke).

5) I'd rather do something like the MoC method, since I'm honestly thinking of using a Missile Boat, and would prefer more room to work instead of getting hosed the first match. I'd check their method first, and see if its acceptable to you. I'd do the Arena first, but then I can't use my Missile Boat.

As far as Solid Shields and Weapon Breaking, I think if you are going to do one, you have to have the other included as well. Even if you do decide to go without Weapon Breaking, I think it would be good to impose a limit (like cannot use the ROZ, so they still have better energy management than Energy Shield users, but at least they pay a little). I'm also a big fan of the non-ROZ Generator for the 008 Core ACs.

In the end, its your show, your rules. I'm just trying to give the wisest council I can offer...in the end, its your call.
DeeBuddens
Banning tread legs was a stray thought. Now that I think about it, it is a bit overly restrictive. A maximum weight cap of 11500(off the top of my head) would be a better idea.

The MG800 is not allowed, end of story. I'm undecided on the K-Saw, although at this point I'll probably keep it.

I'm wide open to any suggestions on stage selection. How about Crest Base for the starting stage?

Adamantrue
Oh well, I guess there is no way to talk you out of it. Its a shame too...I could think of a few basic Blader ACs that could use the extra ability of the 800, if only because Blading is so tough to do itself anymore.

MoC method:
QUOTE
-Arenas: Matches will be best two out of three. At the beginning of a match there will be a cointoss, the winner must eliminate one of the three starting arenas(Arena, Crest Base, or Limestone Caves). Subsequent rounds will be fought in a location of the loser of the previous rounds' choosing, with a 5 minute time limit.

I'm assuming that the loser of the cointoss chooses the first stage from the remaining two starting arenas.

Damn, the Arena and Limestone Caves are both bad for me. I better seriously rethink this Missile Boat idea...

Tourney Info topic at ACO.
DeeBuddens
Macronus and myself are leaning towards a 3-out-of-five match setup, and I'm proposing a 4-minute time limit per match. This should give the people that play keep-away the time they need to remain competitive.

A controversial idea: Should the GNL be banned?

I asked this question at ACO, and the responses I got ranged from, "NO! I LOVE MY BOOMSTICK!" to "You must be scared of it." I'd like some insightful commentary regarding my proposed banning of the GNL.
Emerica
The reason why you got those kind of comments is because you supported no evidence of how it is broken. You just said its banned so quad/tankers dont have to worry about it. Thats why i was saying your scared of playing against it. So maybe you would give me some reason of why you think its broken. But you didnt. So meh.
DeeBuddens
Sure I did. Your head was just so far up your ass, you couldn't listen to anything I was saying. Your opinions on this subject are meaningless, because you won't be attending the tourney.
Adamantrue
QUOTE
Hey, filter, this tourney is a joint effort that's probably being held at my place unless it gets too big, in which case I've got other options . . . Dee hatched the idea, but it's our baby.

That being said, I have discussed this matter with him and agreed with his viewpoint.  In the interest of maintaining creativity and weakening the max attack/max def (n00bish) tank setup, I think this is wise.  I want the competition fresh.  However, I still say it's beatable.  I've got a midweight bearing MOONLIGHT, sniper rifle, and stealth missile with companions that I will put up against any GNL design anyone wants to bring.  Maybe someone can prove me wrong during downtime at the tourney.

Deeks block the GNL?  Seriously?  Must try this.  That's news to me.  Syllaw, didn't realize you weren't serious.  I'm just a skill-over weapons guy.

Whatname: MG shots can block it?  Wow.  This has to be tough.  Must try this as well.

I like all this commentary.  Despite that I often state my opinions firmly (I wish tone-of-voice could come over the net, I wouldn't sound so harsh), I'm open to anything that will make this a better tourney and committed to everyone enjoying themselves, so keep 'em coming.

Wait wait wait....you are considering banning the GNL too? So Quads are going to suffer because its the easiest (and ineffective too, IMO) way to kneecap Tanks?

Please don't take offense to this, cause I'm not trying to be a pain. But, I'm already seriously reconsidered coming to this event. You have made a series of calls which are easy rather than effective, but you are wondering if OP-I is OK?

Good news is that now, the 'SAWA is way ahead of the competition.

God, its bad when I'm sounding like Ruisu...

[edit]

Concerning the Time Limit, I'd like to quote Kuroi Kenshin in the Ban the 800 Topic:

QUOTE
For example, in the Osaka tourney when a mega heavy got his opponent down to about 2500-3000 AP, he put his controller down for the last 2-3 minutes of the fight. biggrin.gif   That was probably the best 2-3 minutes of the tourney!!  The mid standing there dumping all his ammo into the heavy from behind (insignificant damage) and the heavy player humming and twiddling his thumbs.  Meanwhile everyone else waits impatiently for the timer to tick out.  Great tourney action.
DeeBuddens
I very strongly disagree with the use of OP-I for the main tournament. But, Macronus has the final say...it's his house, his equipment, his hospitality we're abusing. What the hay, you wanna hear me say it?

*swallows pride*

WE NEED HELP.

Right now, nothing is concrete. I'll continue listening to points of view until we find some common ground. It's hard work trying to please all the people all the time.

thirteen37
If you're going to include Op-I, just say hell with it and don't ban anything. There aren't enough "official events" testing the full environment to warrant the ban-craziness in Silent Line. MG800's a great weapon... for a machinegun. Solid extension shields are the bomb... unless your opponent's using an energy or heat weapon somewhere.

Or go the other way and do a starter-AC-only tournament instead of fussing over what to ban and what not to ban. There's the true test of a man, mark my words. Everyone's AC is on equal footing.
Adamantrue
Starter ACs? But my Blading sucks, and I really worked hard to get a decent EO game. And they are ugly as hell...

Maybe you should consider not running a full blown "tournament", but instead run things like a large AC gathering. Lack of competition will probably encourage people to show up with a wider variety of AC types, and you could get a serious feel for what is cheap and what isn't (...:cough:...OP-I runner in a 5 minute match...:cough:...). That way, if you want to try something again down the road, like June or something (so we can get a more complete feel for the game), you can impose limits (banning parts, time limits, weapon breaking), you can make much more effective and wiser choices.

I think a good number of us would still be willing to make the trip, or even chip in a few bucks here and there, for something like that.

In all honesty, if you'd go with everything (OP-I and all), I'd still come. Its when you start singling out certain things that it gets touchy.
Banshee
I'm with 'True on the concept of a gathering as opposed to a full-fledged competition. Tournys bring out the worst in a designer, IMO, 'cos it brings out designs based solely to win, with little or no creativity in the main event. But that's just IMO.

Whichever is chosen, I'm there as long as 'true can make it.
BlackFury1
i cant wait till the tournament!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Rules have been finalized. Posted over at ACO, but I'll quote what Macronus said:

QUOTE
Here's where we're at right now.  This is straight from DeeBuddens, and I like what I see so far.  Those who have suggestions, let's have 'em.

There will be two main brackets, the non OP-I bracket, and the anything goes bracket.

For the non OP-I bracket, rules are as follows:

4-out-of-5 match count

5-minute time limit(I've been getting alot of bull from alot of people about the 4-minute time limit...let's just give them a 5-minute time limit, and rest easy knowing that most matches won't lastlonger than four minutes)

First round will be fought in the Arena, loser picks the stage afterwards

10-minute break in between heats

Banned parts:

MG800

SRFL/70

Solid Shields/Extensions

Maybe we should also have a weight cap or a defense cap for tanks, something like tanks aren't allowed if they have over 4100 def. points or something.

Anything goes rules:

2-out-of-3 matches, for the sake of conserving time...although we could probably get away with 4 out of 5...

5-minute time limit

First round in the Arena, loser picks afterwards

10 minute break in between heats

No part bannings, use of OP-I allowed and encouraged

As far as I know, the 17th of January is the date.  Time will be fairly early afternoon to start if possible, if we have a good turn out it may take a while to get all the action in.  We'll go from here as far as solid rules and when I get a chance to call Dee, which may be a couple of days as I'm running around like a nut here, we'll solidify what kind of contributions we need, which should be minimal.

I'm personally very happy with the 5-minute limit. Makes alot of my stuff really have a shot at using up some ammo. wink.gif
Kishin
I'm guessing it's single elimination?

Good luck to 'true and all those that attend.
Thorne
Okay, I'm actually interested now that:
the time limit is up to 5 min
there's a non OP-I bracket
and the ban list is very reasonable, IMO.

Can you guys give me an estimated date as my callendar doesn't list any holidays, etc...

Also, is part breakage off, pick-up on, and OW allowed?

Chris, you me and Ghosty should get together before then to get some stick time in. I'm sure Cory would be game too (at least at my place if not at the tourney).
DeeBuddens
The date will be Jan. 17th, the third Saturday in the month. Hope to see you then.
syllaw blood
3 out of 5 matches... heh counting on everyone being good that shows? hopefully they will be...

it really sucks to have to go through 3 matches with someone of less skill (note: i am not saying that I have uber piloting skills or anything, I dont not in the least, just saying thats too many matches) kind of long and tedious makes the gathering kinda boring... 2 or 3 matches way better.

Have to strongly disagree on that one. I really like the best out of five format because it lessens arena based strength (that's if you make certain that you can't play in the same place twice). Allows people to see the pilots adapt to a variety of stages and showcase more of their ability. I actually can't say that I've seen any lame AC pilots at the two MOC's I've attended, and even the red-shirted guy was fun to play against... Even more fun watching Eric dispose of him in about 20 seconds. laugh.gif
Versellios
HA! Yes! He brought up Red Shirt! LOLOL!!
sandman
Red-Shirt Guy: I'm going to take the next person to Avalon Arena... Going directly to the top of the pillars... Just going to snipe em to death with the SAWA. ends with evil chuckle and Dick Dastardly look

Juju-boy: Really?! That's a cool idea. ends with with complete silence and his usual non-discerning look

Next matchup: Red-Shirt Guy VS Juju-boy...

Sandman: What t... Is he going to fire?!

Magus: H... I guess not.

Ky Kiske: No, no, no, wait! Play that back please, play that back. I think that tops the quick kill record set last year! Hit the replay...

MOC crowd: ...seven-teen, eight-teen, nine-teen, twen-Ooohh, he got it!

...and this the top reason you should always just shut up and play your match rather than talking junk or making any brash predictions prior to game time. Unfortunately, it was a lessen Magus did not learn until a little later in the day... I'll let him fill you in on that one. laugh.gif

Magus outside with Kannon having a cigarette break.
Kannon: So who's left that you fear?
Magus: You to be honest and Oliver goes without saying. Although I can't see you hitting me with that blade the way you have been everyone else today.

Something besides nicotine was obviously in that cigarette. Go see the MoC2 footage if you want to see me get carved up like a Thanksgiving Turkey. sad.gif
sandman
Actually, I don't think he has any neurotic current flowing through the brain region responsible for guilting ones self with the feeling of being a jerk. He was pretty ignorantly unaware of the awkwardly egotistical and all around unpleasant aura he cast on those around him. A more odd character you'll not find.

As for his play, I still stand in saying he was not all that bad. I do not recall who he beat in his first match, but I do recall his jumping up and down exlaiming said victory in a mix of crazed words, identifying both disbelief and utter superiority during the same outburst. Read the above captioned paragraph again for frame of reference For whatever reason he was just completely blind sided by Juju and could only shake and moan in protest. He then relocated same said behaviors to the back of the room, where he was no longer of issue.

When you told me you said that to him prior to your match I almost wet myself laughing. What's funnier is I'm certain Kannon just kind of tooled the cigarette in his hand while you were talking and played right along, shaking his head with that little un-assumingly innocent look of his. laugh.gif

Oh dude, it was comedy. He won his first match and just flew off the handle, spilling tough guy bravado all over the room (read: source of the misplaced confidence that inevitably made his memory a permanent fixture in all of our hearts).

Karl: You CRACK. ME. UP. laugh.gif Now that I have a general idea of what you do to keep food on the table and beer in the ice box, it's less spooky to hear you size up people with such accuracy:

He went up against a relative rookie who got disoriented and panicked when the Sawa blasts started hitting, IIRC. That player started to do one thing, then changed his mind and you don't have time to do that while being blasted by the Sawa in AA.
