Full Version: MLG Gaming Bullshit
The Raven's Haven > Armored Core > Raven Nexus
Millefune
Okay, so MLG has Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the biggest tournament video games second only to Halo 2. These folks say they're the "official word" on video game tournaments. What the fuck is this shit? SSBM IS NOT A VALID SERIOUS TOURNAMENT VIDEO GAME! Is this MLG thing more respected than Evolution and Super Battle Opera?
Daniel
Actually, SSB:M is very much a valid Tourny game. Does anyone watch G4 and it's show Arena? I've seen them choose SSB:M as one of their games for the competition numberous times. It make seem like a button smashing kill fest, but it's depth is suprising once you get further into the moves and their timing.
Sigma
MLG is in no way respected by the fighting game community IN ANY WAY. Evo and SBO get way more respect. Ice Climbers Infinite anyone?
Daniel
It says right there it's done with the wireless controller. No doubt it's an autofire feature or something. >_>
Sigma
This is also doable on a wired pad. It's just to bad I can't prove it. What MLG needs to do is have games that actually require some fucking skill.
3rd Strike>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SSBM
Daniel
Have you even played the game all the way through, or against someone who actually is good at the game?
Millefune
I can see vague skill and timing based goodness in SSB:M, but it is in no way as proper a fighting game as SF3:3S and/or CvS2. At best, it can probably compare to MvC2.

SF3:3S/CvS2 = NBA spec basketball hoop w/ NBA spec ball
SSB:M =Elementary school basketball hoop w/ WNBA spec ball

You can have some skill depth playing with the elementary school hoop and smaller WNBA ball, but it takes more when you bring out the big guns.

SSB:M is a GREAT game, in its own way... but I can't take it seriously. It's a very good Nintendo party game with suprisingly deeper than general party game tactics.

Anyway, just wanted to know what's up with this MLG. I heard about it back in the day of Silent Line, when EJ was trying to get AC recognized by them, but not much ever since.

(Side Note: GGXX:S = "And 1" Street Basketball)
Emerica
SSBM is a pretty deep game and there is comp for it every where and has a huge following. 2D fighting games has little following and hasn't had a decent game released in the usa since 2000. Thats why SSBM is in MLG and Capcom fighters is not.

Also, don't even try to compare Melee to that of capcom fighters. They are two totally different games and are not similar enough to compare.

*EDIT*
Oh yeah, MLG sponsored TX Showdown (well, partnered atleast) one of the biggest 2D fighting games in the country a year or two ago.
Millefune
I'm going to guess that the reason why it has such hugh widespread-ness is because of support from MLG. If MLG supported SF3, it would be a lot bigger than it is now. Or well... maybe it just is that good and I'm wrong... but I doubt that.

As a person who's been playing SSBM fairly seriously regularly for a good year now (and still can't do half the shit that the pros can), I can verify that there is a shit load of skill involved. If you want to actually understand the game, how about you check out a valid resource. Keep in mind that it's a message board, so a certain percentage of the members half to be retarded.

Also, the Ice Climbers infinite grab is banned in tournaments, along with all major match stalling techniques and most of the stages that provide a clear advantage to particular characters (i.e. Hyrule Temple, where a dedicated Fox or Falco can play the entire match by racking up damage with lasers and never engage). Also, the infinite grab is insanely hard to do. A slight screw up will allow them to get out pretty quickly.

Also, MLG picked up SSBM after seeing how well unofficial tournaments were doing. There are bi-weeklies all over the nation; and many of the most respected and most widely attended events aren't even MLG.

SSBM is not that great of a game. I play it a bit, and I play a lot of other "real" fighting games. SSBM is low skill by comparison, especially compared to Slash, ST, MBAC or Arcana Hearts.

It's not that there's not skill, it's just that the gameplay is horribly flat and only at the super high end are real mindgames introduced. Also, tiers in SSBM are incredibly lame (worse than 3S). The Ice Climbers inf isn't even really that good; it's hard to execute enough reps to kill someone with, it requires a fairly precise desync, and it's pretty hard to land a throw in a real match with Ice Climbers. A good Fox player will likely never get hit by it, and even if they do it's not the end of the match - merely a 20% damage combo. Oh noes. Considering how common 30% kills are in Smash, I can't realistically call a throw inf broken.
Booyaka
iceclimbers infinite is NOT banned, and never will be first off it only works if you have 30% OR higher and other characters have lame insta win infinte.

just the fact that STRATAGIES have to even be considered for banning just shows how much bullshit SSBM has(kinda like MVC2 lol dead body infinites ftw).

anywho, ssmb is good but it is overhype' the depth that people give are seriously bullshitin themselves I should know I played thro and thro before I even made a descision, MLG would only showcase 3s if it was purely console, they do sponser Texas showdown tho.

thats the problem MLG doesnt sponser anything thats not console only.

its also why no one cept dumbfucks (who watch g4) respect it, hell they don't even have the big 3 (starcraft,warcraft3,cs)
Demon
SSMB is pretty good competitive wise. When I was in LA for a bit I entered a local tourney with Marth and owned it up. (I'm not THAT good, but I like to think I am biggrin.gif)

Was a cool way to make twenty or so bucks. Dunno about the MLG status for it.

BTW--never seen anyone (IRL) actually pull off that ice climbers thing.
Emerica
Wobbles just won Evolution South whoring out the grab infinite with the Ice Climbers. I hate smash but the video of this shit was hilarious. I will be rooting for Wobbles at Evolution World. Hopefully he gays some pro's over with the infinite.

I am not a smash player but from what I have seen the infinite is not broken. You get 4 lifes which is more than enough to try to avoid the different. In other games you don't even get that. IE Shosho, PTF, Genei Jin, Marvel, Dust Loops, etc. Not to mention I have seen videos of people playing against IC climbers and zoning them very well and seperating them and killing the other one off. It's good, but by no means game breaking IMO.

MLG doesn't sponsor TX Showdown anymore. They did it for one year awhile ago and never did again.
Booyaka
Lame, tho I would never put GeneiJin in that bracket of lame, Its only strong if you get the full damage into it, that and supers trade with it, karathrows beat it and you can parry it, I think you can only zone from the ice climberifnite (or just have lower thatn 30%), its more of rollcanceling and the infinte that make it so strong.

evo west is comin up, you gnna be there sigma?

and on a total unrelated note.
Im in the credits of the next ran-bat as "the fuck jesus guy"
Sigma
The FFA Ranbats? That MegamanDS dude and Rockefeller are some funny ass dudes. Dunno about Evo West anymore. Daft Punk is coming to SF that day. Plus, I need to save my pennies to gamble them at Evo World.
Booyaka
ya ffa ranbats. Megaman hasnt done them for uhhh 2 years now? lol its just John(rockefeller) and he bassically says random shit and interviews the crowed somehow I got sucked into a conversation about jesus.

ahh thats too bad, bout evo west, no prob i'll catch you at evo world.
