Full Version: Get Backers

Well...my friend let me borrow his anime collection on VCD. He's got a fair stock, most of it yuppie magical girl crap (I have my doubts about this boy's sanity at times dry.gif ), but nevertheless I stumbled upon a newer Japanese-release only show called "Get Backers".

Essentially a bunch of young punks going out and getting hired by different people to steal already stolen goods for the original owner. The character design is much like X (though this isnt a CLAMP series), but it's a comedy through and through.
Good animation, not spectacular, but the plot is quite entertaining (although basic at times).
I can see they took a little inspiration from Ghost In The Shell (which is inspired by Blade Runner) and Akira.

Just wondering if anyone had seen it, or even heard about it Stateside?

I've seen some of this. It's a fun show without ridiculously overpowered main characters, all their abilities have a limit. The Evil Eye is especially cool. But it does suffer from Cowboy Beebop's problem of sometimes trying to look TOO hip, with the out of place jazzy music themes that come in and out during each episode.
Also, couldn't they just get a job working at some seedy sushi cart somewhere? They'd make more money, slower of course, but at least they're garunteed customers. And they'd never have to go hungry. For some reason, Ban reminded me of Sol Badguy, and Amano of Axl. That monk with the lightning powers from X, Sorata, had a more similar voice and laugh however.

Btw, I really dislike the title theme and ending themes, they're so sappy and annoying, when in reality a badass J-Rock song would be more appropriate. Hell even a jazz song. Anything but J-Pop, I hate it.

There's a lot of fighting styles similar to Guilty Gear now that you mention it...guys with big fans, using one's hair as a weapon, a blind guy...

Yeah, the songs suck, but I think they change around Episode 10...the whole series changes around that point and gets a helluva lot better.
BTW, the melody for the opening theme was stolen from a Suede song. wink.gif

Don't know, don't care, I hates it. mad.gif
Also, Midou Ban has a move he likes to call the Snake Bite. You haven't played the KOFs with Yamazaki in it, but he has the Snake Arm, and Midou's arm seems to extend via great speed when it hits the opponent's face like a muzzle. Thus it's similar in a way except Yamazaki is just slapping them and Midou usually finishes them with it.
