Hey there SoCal ravens. I'm going to be in LA until saturday night. Not sure at this point if I'm actually going to have time available for anything, but if any of you guys have some free time not occupied with family/christmas events, I'd love to get together for a few hours.

Irvine may be workin' something on... Friday... or Sat depending. PM me if you are interested.

Dec 25 2003, 02:48 PM
Okay, cool. Now I just have to figure out how to get from Simi Valley to Irvine without a car... =(
Kurenai
Dec 25 2003, 03:15 PM
Can you get out to Northridge or so? I'm in Sunland-Tujunga, and I should be free tomorrow. I don't know if I can make it on Saturday, though.
Alphemus
Dec 25 2003, 03:18 PM
If you can't make it, then we won't be doing it... I don't think anyone is coming from that direction... And I can justify asking someone to drive for 4 hrs to pick up, and then drop off.
I guess if there is nothing that can be done, nothing can be done.
If anything changes, keep us informed.
peace.

Well, It's supposed to be going down tomorrow, so that should work fine. I'm in Simi Valley, so I can get a ride to Northridge without problem, and I'd certainly be willing to cover gas and such. Drop me a PM or something because I'd really love to get the chance to get my butt kicked by some of the premier talent on the west coast =)

Dec 25 2003, 03:29 PM
I can pick you up from Northridge or some other place in the San Fernando Valley with no problem. I'd rather not drive out to Simi Valley, back down to Irvine, then back and back, for obvious reasons, but if you can meet me halfway than it should be okay. Of course, if you can get three-quarters or all the way to Tujunga, I won't complain.
Just let me know how far east your first ride is willing to take you, and we can pick someplace to meet up after that.

Dec 25 2003, 03:30 PM
hey hey hey! that is some good stuff...
heres hoping something can get worked out!
Kurenai if you come tomorrow, will you still be up for some game on Sunday?
Morris this is looking pretty good, another top tier player enters the fray, and is even in the area. Hopefully you both can make it. (Kurenai already knows he has an open invite to Irvine gatherings, its his quad busting... hes too good with those things.)
Morris
Dec 25 2003, 03:40 PM
I can get to Kurenai's place, no sweat. Do we have a timeframe here at all? I'm probably booked with family stuff till 2 or 3 pm, but I'm free after that. Now I wish I'd brought my memory card down with me. =P
Alphemus
Dec 25 2003, 03:48 PM
yeah, get to Irvine as soon as you can (3-5pmish as possible) and we will bust it. Hopefully this won't conflict with Kurenai's schedule.
As for the mem-card, I'll give you a save to use, it is only three designs you get to rebuild and save, but it is better than rebuilding a design before every match, right?
Kurenai knows where Blue Boy lives, or at least how to get in touch with him.
I already left The Watcher a voicemail. hopefully he'll be able to make it too.

Sounds groovy to me. Hey Kurenai, PM me your phone and/or directions to your house and stuff, and we'll get this thing set up!
Kurenai
Dec 25 2003, 04:14 PM
I just sent you a PM with my AIM SN, although I won't be on till later. I can set you up with a save file before we leave, also. 3-5 works fine with me; if Morris gets here around 3 then we'll get there between 4 and 5 depending on traffic.

Glad to see shit like this going down. Accolades to all involved! Glad to see your going to get some seat time with some of Cali's finest Morris. Having first hand knowledge of their talent, I can say it's very worth while. Be well and be safe with all the driving guys.
Kurenai
Dec 26 2003, 02:23 PM
All right, Morris just called and said he'll be at my place in 45 minutes or so. That'll have us leaving here at 3, so we'll probably get there around 4 or 4:30, depending on traffic.

Okay, so here I am, back from six hours of glorious combat. Thought I'd drop a line and give some impressions from my time.
Watcher, the bastard, said he was going to show up and then called back an hour later and changed his mind. Although personally, I had a hard enough time dealing with Alphemus and his guys, facing someone like Watcher probably would have just made me sad.
Rose is mean. She's really good at being agressive and it's hard to push her out of her game so you can play yours. Most of the matches I felt really helpless in were against her.
Blue Boy didn't actually play much. I only had a couple matches against him, right at the beginning, and he and I seem pretty evenly matched, skillwise. He really likes the aerial game too much though, and if you do something that keeps him from hovering over your head with his machine gun, it really messes with him.
Kurenai, god. It's like the guy has some kind of hacked game save where his GNL rounds automatically hit, no matter what. He's actually really scary with ANY back cannon, to be honest. His favorite thing is this nasty KNOT quad with the GNL and LQ to punish you with at range, and a dual-mg setup on the hands that (with the help of a custom control setup) can really punish you if you try to run close. I fared pretty well against him, won almost as many as I lost, but I think that has more to do with me having a rather unconventional combat style than anything else.
Alphemus is who I fought most of my matches against, in a wide variety of frames. Alphy plays a really smart game, he's really good about changing tactics when it's called for, and very skilled at controlling range and position. I was actually really startled that I did as well against him as I did, given that up till tonight I was a vs. virgin =p. I was able to surprise him when he started watching my OB game with the Knight tho. When he first saw me playing the Knight against Rose, he was giving me all sorts of suggestions to change it, especially since I had no idea how to use the Knight effectively against Rose's Karasawa. Later on he saw it run against something I was much more comfortable against, and when he saw the way the Knight runs offense, it was like his eyes bugged out and he immediately stole my controller and started kicking butt with the Knight (rather more effectively than I do, I might add...) for the next hour with a look of barely concealed glee on his face. I think he was more impressed with my AC than he was with me.
I had a heck of a lot of fun, and I think my game improved rather dramatically from the beginning of the night to the end. I was redlining a LOT at the beginning, and not using decoys very well. By the end I was feeling a lot more confident, even against Alphemus' nastiest ACs. I brought a wicked back-and-forth OB charge game that I wasn't sure was going to work against human beings, but turned out to be everything I hoped it would be. It took me a little while to learn how to use the OCs against people properly with the Knight. Against the AI I always tend to use them at range to soften up my opponent, at which point I dump them and charge in with the shotgun/grsl. Against this crew, I found that I really needed to hold on to the orbits and use them in conjunction with the shotgun/grsl in order to really make it play. I found a whole new use for the orbit cannons : as a defensive weapon as I finish an OB run to force people to LET ME RECHARGE. Tossing down an OC volley as I finish an OB run makes the opponent decide wether to run from the orbits and give me free time to recharge my capacitor, or charge in and have to take the orbit damage AND face the GS/GRSL combination. When it works, it works very well. When it doesn't work, it usually hurts a lot, but there you go.
At any rate, It was WELL worth the effort it took to get it together, and I offer mad propz to Blue Boy for hosting the event, and Kurenai for dragging my sorry butt all the way down there and, more importantly, being willing to bring me BACK.

Not a problem, not a problem.
I know you didn't intend to, but be careful not to sell Blue Boy's aerial game short. Few people pull it off as well as he does, and he can really pound you once he gets in that sweet spot - personal experience speaking there! I doubt that he was at the top of his game today, though, seeing as how he slept through most of the day.
Mike was as crazy as he always is with his GRSL jousting, messing up quite a few return shots I had lined up with my GNL. I found myself playing too much like a tank and not enough like a quad, or to paraphrase Tony, "the absorber of left arm grenades and shotgun blasts." Great head for strategy on that guy, also; if your AC has a flaw, you can count on him finding it and using it to his advantage.
I don't think I played many rounds against Rose today, but her Karasawa game looked as deadly as ever in her matches against Morris. Morris himself was in for a bit of a tough line-up, our being his first real life opponents, but I thought he acquitted himself admirably - you could definitely see the improvement over the course of the evening.
I'm not the world's greatest AC analyst, and it's a bit late, so I think I'll stop here. Anyways, good times were had by all - at least, by me. Thanks again to Blue Boy for hosting this, and we're glad you were able to make it, Morris.

Glad everyone had fun (it's always fun to play AC). Sorry I couldn't be present. This was not something I wanted to miss.

No changing of mind, just a change of situation.
I was not in LA. I was hoping I can drop by Irvine on the way home but I was pressed for more time from where I was. Keep in mind, I was already nearly two hours away. It turned out by the time I could have made it, it would have been passed 10pm--not the 8pm that I hoped for.
Anyone game for today by any chance? Or Monday?

Hey, no worries. It happens. For a while it didn't look like *I* was going to make it, which would have been very sad. It is too bad we missed you, although the guys that WERE there knocked me around badly enough as it is. I think Alphemus summed it up very nicely.

The main thing, I think, that made me feel more competitive against him than I did against the rest of you is that that 'hovering over your head raining machine gun rounds' offense that he uses feels a lot like fighting the AIs like Nameless. Blue Boy is by far a more interesting opponent, but what he was coming at me with was something I was used to being hit by and used to dealing with. It took me a while to get used to how to play against you and Mike, and I never did figure out how to handle Rose's Karasawa game. I know I can do it, I just needed to get blasted a dozen more times or so until I figured out how to control range properly.

Morris, First and foremost it was great to finally meet you. I hope we can meet again (sooner rather than later), so I can see what you're experience and some digestion time has brought you to. Just from the development from the night, you improved vastly, and my hat is off to you both for BK, and your incredible skill for a first time VS player.
Kurenai, I really want to thank you for helping Morris out with transport, and I am really glad that we got another chance to play. I hope we'll be able to see a lot more of those AC skills man... If nothing else there is ample opportunity for more AC.
That being said...
I have to second Kurenai Don't count Blue Boy for his performance yesterday. He is extremely ill, and the initial symptoms were just showing at that time. He is bedridden currently,at home, swinging from sweating to shivering in the time of a few seconds, and can't stay awake for more than a half an hour without passing out again. He wasn't playing to par. I don't want to sound... terse but Blue Boy competes on an even keel and regular basis with many So. Cal players, and is a skilled and respected player of the game, anyone who has played him can tell you that no amount of AI play can prepare you for the "Blue Boy Efect," or the "Pegasus Launch," when he is on top of his game. You actually were shorted, in that he wasn't able to perform to his normal standard of excellence yesterday. He is typically more fun to have around, and puts on quite a show. In and out of game.
On to lighter subjects...
Rose, and I really enjoyed meeting and playing with Morris (Blue Boy is naturally not available for comment), and we hope to play him again. with the skill he brought to the table this time, next time should be even more impressive, now that he has had that chance to feel out human Vs.
Morris has always been among the elite few I respect the most on the boards (not counting my brothas, the Cali boys), and yesterday, he rose higher in esteem, and showed that he doesn't just have one of the finest AC minds, but has fingers and strats to match. Don't let this cat fool ya with his "lack of Vs. time," he is pure Killing machine under that orange fluffy (see av) fascade.

Glad everyone had fun!
I would have loved to get some AC versus from Morris!
If you compare yourself to Blueboy's skill level then I must admin you must be a pretty good player!
Could you post some of the ACs you used?

I apologize for any misconception on my part. Perhaps a more accurate way to describe my feelings towards my matches with
Blue Boy was : He didn't kick my ass like the rest of y'all did. If he was not playing his usual game, that certainly leaves food for thought, and obviously his performance at MoC last time around indicates that he is not to be taken lightly.
The one thing that made me very happy about the whole business was being able to actually test wether my faith in certain attack patterns and weapon combinations was justified, and that did indeed prove to be the case. The OC/R36 combination functioned very reliably in all the matches I played, the shotgun/grsl combination proved itself to be everything I wanted it to be, and I was able to demonstrate adequately to myself that yes, the eight hundred points of refresh and 15% better OB endurance of the GROA/DUSK combination does, in fact, greatly outweigh the cooler OB and 3000 points of soak value that the 008/TIN combination does. Many people suggested the 008/TIN frame to me for exactly that reason, as did
Alphemus that very night, right up until he saw exactly what you can do with the GROA OB and a 6k refresh rate.
I'm actually greatly more satisfied with the Knight's performance than I am with my own. While I floundered about, completely failing to use dekes effectively and redlining twice a match, the Knight performed flawlessly, especially when
Alphemus took him off my hands and ran him against
Rose and
Kurenai, using him to much greater destructive effect than I had been able to.

Man, that sounds like a great gathering... Wish I could have been there.
So: Do you think you're gonna make it to MoC4? I'm itching to play with you now (not to mention getting some more play against Al's group, ACO wasn't nearly enough for my AC thirst).
Morris

That's certainly my intention. I have a lot more confidence in my ability to compete on an equal level with at least some of the people showing up, especially now that I have a very clear idea of where my game needs improvement, and where my strengths are. It was a great time, and it's too bad that more people couldn't show up, although there certainly wasn't any lack of good opposition.
