Full Version: Sacramento Vs.
The Raven's Haven > Armored Core > Raven Nexus
Kobel
It sounds like Kannon has some free time this Sunday, and I think an AC gathering is long overdue. Shaun, Eric, and myself seem to be interested, but unfortunately due to recent events that leaves us 1 PS2 short of a linked setup! So: John? Jeff? Wanna come and complete the set, play some vs? Anyone?
Jujuboy
I talked to Ben about this on the phone. It prolly be a good idea to dust of the skills, so I'm game but don't expect anything new since my system is still in the shop. In case I ignore the board for awhile Kobel or Joust should prolly call me if something does go down.
Kobel
On closer inspection it's highly improbable I'd actually be able to make it to such an event given my current health status. Wishin' you guys a rockin' vs session.
Jujuboy
We may just wanna wait a week. I should be up a PS2 by then and may have even *gasp* made a new AC.
joust
Sweet.

I mean it Eric, you're a sweetie-pie.

Already, Next Sunday then? I'm going to clean out my saves.

We can exchange Naitoh's arena by then. You'll be pleasantly surprised. It's pretty kick ass.
CrimsonII
hmm, well I need an address, but I'd like to get in on this for a change, and also maybe some sort of a time frame
Duneman
Eh no one is sure exactly whats up... just poke back in this thread every Thursday (assuming that there are new posts) until something is set.
CrimsonII
well, I figured something like that, considering I am pretty close to the area, makes it easy to get there, just would like to know around what time to be there, and where for that matter
Demon
huh...drive from modesto to sacremento = about...45=50 minutes...I could make it...I got a ps2 that is seeing no action lately (i've been playing MoA alot, on the ps1, and my brothers are busy with Windwaker...)

just get set on some details...
Kishin
Sunday the 10th, then?

Not positive, but that sounds good.
Demon
so...is there a location?

or has it yet to be determined...
Kobel
I should be able to make it, aside from the occasional cough I seem to be more or less recovered.
Darth Necros
What's up gang... I'm the FNG!! lol... I live in Sac, Carmichael really, if it would be cool I wouldn't mind getting in on the action. I always like to get my butt whipped by the Vets. of a new game (new for me). Let me know what's kicking and maybe I can come and get a few rounds of ammo off.
Thanks,
Darth Necros
Duneman
Note to new guys, if you can bring your PS2's we may very well be able to set up 4-player hub matches. You must experience linked hub matches at least once.
Kishin
I'm going to be out of town and away from a computer all the way up till Sunday morning. I'll just assume this is happening and give Kannon or someone a call Sunday morning to double check, yeah?

I've got a PS2, no Silent Line and no TV.
Jujuboy
I'm down. I'm thinking we should prolly do this at Kannon's if we're gonna have out of towners but I'm okay to host if that's a no-go.
Kishin
Eric: Could you PM me your address in case I have to drive out to your casa for this?
Jujuboy
Done.

I'll try and talk to Kannon today or tomorrow and hammer down the time/location and have one of us make a post here.
Kishin
Right on. That was some quick response time.
CrimsonII
well, I can definitely bring along my ps2, dont have a tv to bring, and I'm not exactly a newcomer, but I've yet to play anything above two player linked
Darth Necros
PS2 = DEAD Sorry.
Any other info.???
Thanks,
Darth Necros
Demon
so...friday night...is there a set location yet?

still need some schedule tweaking on my part to see if i can show...if any one has details PM me...
Jujuboy
All right I talked to Kannon and we're on for 11:00am Sunday at his place. See yah guys there.
Darth Necros
I can bring a big TV and a Modulator if we need one?? I have been talking to joust and I live in Sac and have transportation... Let me know what's up...
Thanks,
Darth Necros
Duneman
Sunday at 11am... cool, lets me get three hours of sleep first. Urgh.....
CrimsonII
darn, lil too early, I'd probably be there around 1 or 2 at best, but one other problem, when I asked a friend of mine if he would give me a ride turned me down, so I haven't any transportation, and also I don't even have my copy of sl right now, well maybe next time
Demon
11:00?....alright, I for one, know for sure, that I will be bringing a PS2, and game(s)

so...thats one more you can count on
Duneman
Eh, I'll probably be delayed until about 11:30 or so.
Kishin
Yo' Demon, are you the fella I met at Kannon's on Sunday? If so, thanks for making the trip.
Duneman
Oh and I should apologize for my absence. The folks decided that last Saturday was a fine day to flip out and inform me that I'd be scrubbing the house clean on Sunday. So I couldn't make it... on the plus side all the home appliances look all shiny and new. tongue.gif
thirteen37
So who/what won on Sunday?
Kishin
I ran:

Moon Drop (Always does well, for some reason)
Some version of Neo-Rulebreaker (did well, but didn't see a lot of action)
Zeus (an EO mid, got hammered by MG-800 Hunk)
K-SAW quad blader (got hammered)
An XCG20 mid (not so hot)

Kannon was on top of his game. The rest of us have been unable to play SL for at least a few weeks now, so we - overall - got romped.

I saw lighter designs dominating in the Garage, which was counter-intuitive initially, but made more sense after a revelation (read: "It was finally driven home to me..." below).

I saw an EDGE sniper with the 80 shot energy sniper that was unusually effective.

It was finally driven home to me that the key to whipping ass in SL pushing the pace with extreme OB tactics. That 'dance better than the other guy and you'll do more damage in gun fights' bit doesn't apply anymore. Heavies dodge better than they should for their D. Ya gotta get tricksy with the OB.

Duh, huh? Pardon me for being a bit slow.

It wasn't a spectacular or conclusive VS session, by any means. It was great having a new guy, but there was a general air of apathy from everyone exluding he and big K. Once Ben and Eric get their PS2's back and I get my disc again, things should look up.
thirteen37
Thanks for the quickie summary.

You mean lights ruling the Parking Lot? I do it too. Lights have a major edge in that they can hug the pillars a lot better, and heavies generally have to advance straight into their fire for 99% of the match. Of course, mess up once and it's game over. EDIT: I think more than "lights rule" it's "single-shot damage rules". It's impossible to hit with a series of attacks in the Parking Lot thanks to pillars constantly in the way.

Which kinda translates to "lights rule", I think. They have the ability to get better angles and generally have better turn rates, so even if the heavy and the light have the same weapon, the light should generally beat out the heavier D of the big design.

That EDGE/80 shot energy shotty AC I was talking about (Kannon's) was beating out a GNL quad (even if it was a bit lame for a quad) consistently there, IIRC. Either that or it was a SAWA mid. OB, OB, OB, hug da' pillar, OB, pillar, OB, facial, etc. It's almost fun to watch, as it's remenicsent of the angle games of AA or whatever.
Demon
yeah, that was me, kishin...

I had a lot of fun, getting Pwned by Kannon and Kobel (fear the K's...mostly from Kobel, though laugh.gif )

let me know next time one of these is put together!

Kobel
For a lot of the matches in the parking garage, though, one player seemed to care a lot more about the outcome. That makes a big difference.
I've always felt that the parking garage doesn't favor heavies NEARLY as much as most people seem to think, mostly because of the sheer quantity of cover. If you want to r0xX0r someone using a heavy, IMO the underground factory is your best bet.

For the record, I used:
Shogun (high defense KRT RJ w/ Burst missiles, RF160, and HZL)
Hydra (D4TZL tank with TR90, 36 shot supports, and CNG300)
Cerberus (WIZ quad with GS72, SRFL50, and LQ/15)
Rapture (WAKE/SECTOR sniper)
Dualist (OW SOLID RJ w/ KARASAWA, HA40 and 36 shot supports)
Violent Soul (Heavy RJ w/ MG1000, HZL50 and MM/16. I entered it in the last ghost tournament)
And a crappy XCW90 + triple rockets AC.
Demon
god damn that dualist...that match will live on for all eternity in my mind...every time I hear the name Kobel...but it was funny...it was funny as hell...

(for thoes who don't have a clue what i'm talking about, he dropped the 'sawa and went on me with the HA's, and I had enough weight to pickup the 'sawa...and I couldn't pick it up...I tried like, 6 or 7 times...and then he comes in out of an OB...and picks it up from right in front of me...like i said, hilarous! biggrin.gif)

Underloaded tanks can keep up with just about anything for turn rate... it's hard to build a frame so heavy that it can't ditch weapons down to 6000WP load or so, where you're not losing much turn rate for being heavy.

Also, being heavily armored, a heavywieght doesn't mind using lateral mobility to cut in on lighter ACs that are trying to circle around them. I've almost gotta come in side-on ala OB-hooking or carry turnboosters if I want to want to catch a keen player (read: Space Pirat) at the angles game. Some arenas though, parking lot and ruins, are so full of stuff that I find myself at a big disadvantage if I'm not spending most of my time moving forward through the terrain... turn rate and turnboosters rock those stages.

EDIT: I can only speak from experience. Maybe other people have an easier time flanking an etc, it's something I didn't try to exploit after MoA so maybe I'm just out of touch.

I'm just speaking based on what I saw in scattered matches throughout SL. You're estimations are probably more accurate.

Blading was the only cause I ever really tried to exploit angles for, which was stupid. Every time I think I've come to terms with what SL expects of us, I have to do a double take and further adapt to fit in. It's kind of like getting over a girl.

Just let the old ways go, Kish!
Thorne
I don't mind the parking lot so much, but I absolutely abhor it once the lights go out. My black level and contrast are usually adjusted so "well" that that once the lights go out it's brutally difficult to see. Do you guys have the TV adjusted the same way you'd view a movie on the sucker or use 'special' settings for AC?
thirteen37
I adjusted my TV settings so that Armored Core looks good, and let the chips fall where they may when it comes to watching movies. It's a quality-of-life enhancing thing lol.
Kishin
If I'm playing my family's Sony flat screen, I switch the picture mode over to 'Vivid' for a bright, colorful, detailed look. On my personal TV, I just made sure the settings were optimized for AC. It's designed for videogames to begin with, so it has a pretty sweet picture regardless of what I do.

It just sucks that the swivel base broke.
Thorne
Here's what I'm getting at - if you adjust your colors / contrast for a movie so that your blacks are black and flesh tones look realistic (i.e. set the colors and contrast the way they are meant to be set - still subjective, but you get what I mean), can you still play the parking garrage effectively once the lights go out?

Maybe we're fiddling too much to make that stage work - the TV settings for that stage, IMO, are crucial and maybe don't even work unless we force them. If you're playing linked and one TV is a bit brighter, the person who can't see as well will most likely get owned. God forbid one of your link TVs is 'new' and the other from the early 80s like mine. LOL, Cory gets the one from the 80s...
Kishin
In that case, I don't know. I've never felt the need to tweak out my TV settings for DVD's as I don't have a super-movie rig to begin with. If I had a delicious 5.1 sound system, a DVD player with optimized video outputs and a TV that could make use of them I'd probably care a whole lot more.

As things stand, video game settings seem to work well for whatever I want to do with a television that doesn't involve VHS.
Berserker
Thorne you're right that playing in the garage is basically playing in the dark with the TV set to the way you would view TV or movies. I do the same thing Kishin mentioned. I've got a Sony flat screen and when I'm playing any video game I put the picture mode on VIVID or SPORTS. Otherwise there's a lot of games that suffer from not being able to see.
Duneman
Well, on the monitor I play games on I have it set to "All-Seeing-Eye". tongue.gif

Basically with the lights out I can still see everything. I can still see everything even in other games (which I won't mention because someone will be like, "OMGWTF you have that game for PS2?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!") where you are in the dark and supposed to use a flashlight. I just like being able to see what the heck I'm doing in a game. happy.gif
